3 Steps to Starting Your Job Search

 - Networking

  1. As a recruitment consultant, I believe in taking a holistic approach to your job search and using every tool possible to ensure you secure the perfect job. One area that is often overlooked is networking so Teamworx have compiled 3 basic steps to get your job search started:

  2. Build a list of local Retailers to target using Wikipedia.

The very first step in this journey is to build a list of companies that is within your geographical location. I like to use Wikipedia to perform this search. They have developed massive lists of companies according to geographical location that you can view all on one page. Also, you can click on most of these companies and begin to learn more about them. For now, just try and build a huge list of companies.

  1. Begin monitoring the company job boards on your list.

A number of companies have their own job boards under the career section on their site. While some job board aggregators are getting better at adding these postings to their search results, still there are several companies that still only advertise on their company page or with Agencies directly.

  1. Expand your list of companies using Linkedin.

Finally, use Linkedin as a way to discover even more companies that are local to you that you may not have known about. Under People search go to the advanced search feature. Choose a category like “retail” and then select to search by country. This will yield results on people in your industry. At this moment you are not looking for people, but instead looking for the company names of where they currently work. Add these new company names to your list.

 THE CHANGING WORLD OF RECRUITMENT

Recently i have read a lot of articles regarding the changing world of recruitment and how Social Media and the socialization of the web is taking over. With LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter etc some say sourcing is simple and companies are increasingly recruiting themselves. However, here at TEAMWORX we beg to differ!!

In the Retail Sector, not everyone is on online, has a Linked In profile or spends hours throughout the day on their computer. Although Facebook has over 1 billion users, Twitter has around 200 million regular users and LinkedIn over 200 million users thats still a very large percentage of the population who is not online and probably even more in the Retail Sector.

The key claim that organisations can source candidates directly is now true due to quantity however as the old saying goes, quality is always better than quantity. It is rare to get a great candidate from an advert and a company cannot rely soley on this.

The way a recruiter works is changing and will continue to do so. Change is good and its something we welcome however the core aspect of our job will always remain the same -

We will always source candidates using innovative means (even those who arent represented online

We will filter and qualify candidates to find the "best", which is becoming even more important the more candidates that are out there

We will always represent a large variety of prestigous companies and brands rather than just one - the more opportunities you have as a candiate, the more likely you are to secure the perfect job.

So if your looking for a new job and would prefer to speak to a qualified recruiter who has extensive industry knowledge, contact Teamworx on 045 89807 or 01 5240584.

Doing More with Less - Postive Signs of Recovery in 2013

Blogging Department --- Wednesday, January 02, 2013

So, its been a Christmas of spending with hordes of bargain hunters swarming the countries Department Stores against the tide of recession. Arnotts have reported a "double digit" jump on last years sales and sales in Dundrum are up between 10 and 30 per cent.  Footfall for the Christmas period was also up by between 12 and 15 per cent so positive signs of recovery all round.

Retail Excellence Ireland chief executive David Fitzimons said the small surge in growth is welcome, but it should be viewed in the context of the dismal last four years of trading.  "We are seeing growth for the first time in five years at about two and a half per cent pre Christmas.  There are a number of factors that have contributed to the slight increase in consumer spending - including good weather during December and a Budget that was, for some, less harsh than expected."

One of Teamworx clients, Kilkenny Shop Director Marian O'Gorman noted a similar trend in average spend despite expecting to record between five and eight per cent growth for 2012. " People are buying a lot less and smaller items. They have a budget in their mind and they are not going over it".

REI Chief Executive believes the economy is now at a juncture which could lead to a path of recovery but said it lies in the hands of the Government.

Here at Teamworx, we have already noticed an upsurge in the number of Retailers recruiting at Mid and Senior Management level. "We look forward to a positive start for the Recruitment Sector in 2013 and I really feel Retailers are on the road to recovery", says Denise Brady, Managing Director, Teamworx.

5 Interview Questions you should be asking!

5 Interview Questions you should be asking

Now that you have secured a job interview, the rest is up to you!  Preparation and research is key for any job interview and will help you stand out from the crowd.   Listed below are some of the most popular and difficult questions that can be asked in an interview situation:

• What preparation have you done for this interview?
Browsing the company website is threshold preparation, hiring an interview coach, speaking to some current staff members, setting up a google alerts, even researching the interviewers, shows a candidates motivation and attention to detail.

• How would your last manager/ current manager rate your performance and how would you rate it yourself?
You are looking for the candidates levels of self awareness and ability to assess their performance from a neutral position. Alarm bells should sound if the candidate starts to bad mouth their past manager.

• What frustrates you about working with people on a daily basis?
This is one where you are looking for a short answer. It can be amazing though how a question framed in the negative can open up a can of worms for some candidates.

• Tell me about a time at work that brought you a great sense of satisfaction?
A very open question that on the face of it seems very straight-forward. But if we listen closely the candidate is communicating more than they think. Does the situation they describe involve working in collaboration with others or by themselves? Were they initiating a task or seeing something through to completion? Where they helping others to succeed?

• Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
A traditional, but still effective question. It indicates whether the candidate is interested in a job or career. Are they ambitious? Are they results-focused, that is, have they set broader life goals for themselves? We are not looking for specifics, we are looking to see if the candidate has a focus that stretches beyond the short-term.

Planning your Job Search

YOUR JOB SEARCH @ WORKHAPPY.IE

What can you do when you have to find a job fast? It's not easy, but there are steps you can take to expedite your job search. Spending some time to get your job search in order, keeping it organized, focused, and on the fast track will help you find a job faster than if you don't have a plan in place.

Rather than missing your job search targets, you'll be spending your time job searching in an effective manner if you take it one step at a time - and stay on top of managing job search process.

Plan and Organize Your Job Search
Taking a few minutes to make a list of everything you're going to do to job search, is a great way to get your job hunt off to a good start. In addition to knowing what you're going to do, you'll have the satisfaction of crossing items off your list.
Take some time now to organize your job search and the entire process will be easier.

Write Your Resume
Your resume needs to be professional and polished, because if you don't have a professional resume, your application materials probably won't get a second glance from a hiring manager.

Create a Personal Cover Letter Template
Write a cover letter you can use as a starting point for the customized cover letters you are going to write when you apply for jobs. It will give you a base to work with and it's good practice. When you find jobs to apply for, the basics will be in place and you'll only need to take the time to target your letter to each job opening.

Create / Update Your Professional Profiles
One of the most important parts of online job searching is your profiles. That's what you use to connect with people in your network and your profile is how you get found on LinkedIn and other networking sites by potential employers. Create profiles if you don't have them and update your profiles if you do, so they are current and compelling.

Select Job Search Websites
Don't post your resume or look for jobs on every job search website under the sun or use all of them to job search. Instead, speed up your job search by using the job search engines to search for jobs across the Internet. Also, select niche sites, which are job sites focused on a specific industry or career field, and local job sites, that list jobs in a city, region, or state, that are match for the types of jobs and where you want to work.

Use Your Words
When you're searching for jobs online, it is important for you to type in the best criteria (search words) to make your searches the most relevant to retrieve your target jobs.

Network Your Way to a New Job
Career networking should be a part of your daily job search routine. It doesn't take long to send an email or a LinkedIn or Facebook message just to say hello and to mention that you're job searching.

Ace the Interview
The rest of this advice will be to no avail if you do all the right job search stuff, then blow the interview. Once you have been selected for a job interview, it's important to prepare properly. That means practicing interview questions and answers, dressing in appropriate interview attire, and, after the interview, sending thank you letters to your interviewers.

Follow Up
Follow up - with everyone. As I mentioned, send a thank you email or note after your job interviews. Send a quick message on LinkedIn or Facebook or a Direct Message on Twitter to the people who help with your job search, gave you a job lead, put you in touch with a connection, or gave you advice. A little thanks goes a long way.

JOB SEARCH TOOLS

Job Search Tools
In addition to the standard job search tools you need to conduct a professional job search (like a professional email address and voicemail), there are new tools, and new features on existing resources to help you expedite your job search.

Before you seek employment make sure you have the appropriate tools for a professional and business-like job search because the first impression you give an employer is the most important one.

Facebook Apps for Job Searching
Just about everyone is using Facebook for personal networking, but you can use it for professional networking, as well. With lots of job search applications to choose from, Facebook is becoming more than a social networking site. These Facebook applications can all be used as part of your job search.

Job Search iPhone Apps
There are a variety of job search apps available for your iPhone and iPod Touch. You can download apps that search for jobs by keyword and location, email job listings, keep track of your contacts, and even create a resume.

Using Instant Messenger (IM) to Job Search
Instant messaging (IM) services can be a good tool to use when job searching. If you have an instant message account you can use it for networking, both with the people on your buddy list and with professional contacts.

Job Search Engines
Use a job search engine to search the top job sites, company sites and online newspapers. There are a variety of job search engine sites that will search all the job sites and even the search engines to capture new job postings.

LinkedIn and Your Job Search
How to use LinkedIn as part of your job search, including how to increase your visibility and connections, so employers and recruiters can find you.

We hope that these tips will help you on your way however if you would like some one to one advice, call us for a friendly chat on 045898037

5 TIPS TO WORKING WITH RECRUITERS – RECRUITER.COM

I recently read this article on recruiter.com and wanted to share it with you as it explains how to get the best from your Recruitment Agency - enjoy and happy job hunting!

Working with recruiters is the next best thing to working with hiring managers. Recruitment professionals know their clients and they pride themselves on knowing their candidates in the hopes of making the right connections. In order to make this happen there are a few things you need to know:

    TELL THEM EVERYTHING:
When building a relationship with a recruiter, this is no time to be shy. Recruiters need to know everything there is to know about you and what you are looking for in your career, i.e. salary, perks, specific employers, etc. Building an effective relationship with a professional recruiter starts with trust and honesty, so be forthcoming with your requests.

    FIND OUT EVERYTHING:
Relationships are a two way street. When working with a professional recruiter you need to know as much about them as it relates to their capabilities and ability to help you secure employment. Do a thorough background check on the recruiter and/or the company. Review all the social networking sites where the recruiter does business and if they do not recruit via these new mediums, be aware; it might mean that they are not keeping up with workforce trends and new recruiting practices.

    COMMUNICATE OFTEN:
Unfortunately securing a recruitment professional does not mean you will secure employment immediately. There can be a lot of waiting involved. Sitting still and waiting for the phone to ring is not an option for you. You are part of the communication equation and you must take an active role in all aspects of your career.

Approach your job hunt like you already have a job. If you see something online, hear about it on a website, see it on the news – contact your recruitment professional and collaborate with them on a game plan. Good recruiters are savvy and well connected, like real estate agents. They tend to know where all the hot properties are. However, they can not be everywhere, so the more hands they can have working in your favor the better.

    BE REALISTIC:
Understand that you are not the recruiters’ only client. Schedule standing meetings no matter how short; just get them on the calendar. Recruiters understand your urgency however they have other clients asking for the same things. Work with your recruitment professional to set realistic goals that are effective and actionable.
